Since being established in July 2009, The Music Exchange has distinctly evolved from its humble beginnings selling second hand vinyl; it is now a thriving, newly refurbished record store, stocking brand new records and collaborating with and supporting Nottingham’s local community and music scene.
The Music Exchange doesn’t stop at bringing new and exclusive vinyl to the heart of Nottingham. Most importantly, it is a social enterprise which is closely interlinked with the ‘Framework’ homelessness charity. The store acts as an invaluable means of support for vulnerable individuals that require the help of Framework: The Music Exchange is a platform for these individuals to gain confidence and independence by volunteering in the shop.We ensure that we provide a safe environment for individuals who have experienced a period of unsettled life to rebuild their self esteem whilst gaining invaluable retail experience.
However, our full team of volunteers consists of people from all walks of life: some work full time, several are students, and others have no work history at all. We think that the diversity and inclusivity of our team of staff helps to make The Music Exchange unique. We feel that our volunteers are provided with a solid platform on which to develop positive social networks by starting from a common ground: our shared love of music.
The Music Exchange also plays a significant role in boosting Nottingham’s new music scene, by acting as an outlet in which local bands can sell their records and merchandise commission free. In return, a number these artists have offered to participate in the events and nights The Music Exchange regularly hosts around Nottingham, which raise money and awareness that feeds back into the development of the store and the support we offer our volunteers.
We exclusively sell new vinyl across most genres and wherever possible match or charge less than other retailers. We also stock a limited amount of secondhand CDs, DVDs, 7” & 12” vinyl at sensible prices, making it affordable for everyone to buy some great music whilst making a difference.
The Music Exchange displays signed photos of live artist performances, provided to us by David Baird, the renowned Nottingham photographer. Prints are available for sale in the shop.
